Emotional Swings: A weekly snapshot

Here at Tenor, our GIF search data gives us a unique view into how people feel — and how they express those emotions — on a daily basis. It turns out that that daily experience shifts over the course of a week. Here, a snapshot view.

Sunday

Tenor searches for hangover surge on weekends, especially Sundays.

This is foreshadowed, of course, by the spikes we see in GIF searches for terms like party, beer and getdrunk, on the days prior. Our advice?

Monday

Oh, Mondays! The struggle is real… People are more likely to search Tenor for bored, ugh and tired GIFs as they start the work week.

Of course, no one embodies this disdain for Mondays better than the king of laziness himself….

Tuesday

Tuesday is only slightly less miserable for many, coming in a close second on Tenor searches for bored, ugh and tired GIFs. What makes Tuesdays bearable? A weekly surge in Tenor searches for tacos reveals one popular (and delicious!) coping mechanism..

Of course, we think tacos are for every day.

Wednesday

Wednesday didn’t earn its moniker “hump-day” for no reason. Searches for busy, work and flirty peak during this most hectic day of the week.

On the lighter side, the cult classic Mean Girls also spikes on Wednesdays.

Thursdays

Tenor searches for lunch GIFs spike on Thursdays. People work up an appetite as the weekend comes within view!

But they have to push through the final hours of the work week, with Tenor searches for back to work peaking right after.

Friday

Weekend on! We see several Tenor search terms that spike on Friday, including freedom, payday, party, beer, weed, wine and movies, which all reach their peaks on Friday.

Saturday

Netflix and chill jumps big in Tenor searches on weekends, especially Saturdays.

Exercise is actually at its lowest on Saturdays. Hey, we’re not judging.

So basically…

More than 200 million people each month use Tenor to add tone to their mobile messaging conversations by adding GIFs that visually communicate their thoughts and feelings — better than words ever could. We process more than 200M mobile search requests daily and have used this data to build the Tenor Emotional Graph, which powers our GIF Keyboard app and GIF sharing for partners including Apple iMessage, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Twitter, Google Gboard, Kik, LinkedIn, TouchPal and others.
